The Putt-a-line is intended to be used on the putting green after the golf ball has been marked with a coin and removed. Positioning the curved end pointing forward and hovering over the coin, the groove is aimed at the intended line of play. The golf ball, which has been pre-inscribed with a line on it’s equator, is replaced on the green in the concavity of the Putt-a-line so that the line on the ball is continuous with the groove on the Putt-a-line. The Putt-a-line is then removed, followed by the coin. The ball remains on the green with the pre-inscribed line oriented in the intended line of play ready to be putted.

With the ball positioned so the equator line is toward the intended line of play, the putting stroke can be made more confidently. It is currently within the Rules to manually orient the ball such that the line on the ball or trademark is oriented in a specific direction, however this may be time-consuming and not particularly accurate. With the Putt-a-line device, placing the ball and orienting the line on the ball is quicker and inherently more accurate. The use of the Putt-a-line will speed play for those players who take the time to align the trademark or line prior to stroking their putt and the end-over-end rotation of the line during the putt will be an indication of the trueness of the roll. In addition, as a practice aid, the device is often useful in revealing discrepancies in the golfer’s perception of where his putter is aimed.
